Mealworms are purchased at pet stores as food for larger critters. We happen to have a critter that enjoys them very much: our Leopard Gecko, Link. He has a lovely little abode complete with a ceramic dish to sort of corral the mealworms while they are waiting for their turn to…well, you know.
Did you also know that mealworms are kept in the refrigerator for a reason? (We have a “very special, approved location” for said worms, in case you were curious.) Low temperatures keep the larvae from going into the next phase of metamorphosis. This is handy to keep the food “fresh” for a number of days while they are waiting their turn to…well, you know.
Leopard Geckos do not live in refrigerators, as you might have guessed. A shedding gecko does not eat a great deal for a few days before, during, and after molting. An overfed gecko’s lunch may wait in the food dish for several days, in that case.
Why do I wake up to things like the following:
“M-o-o-o-o-o-o-om! One of the mealworms turned into a beetle! It’s in Link’s cage crawling around.”
A far off voice reports, “Don’t worry! I killed it!”
Welcome to my world of boys.

HA! I can actually hear this conversation going on in my head. SCARY! lol
I was told that mealworms are a favorite of chickens. I will have to check this out in greater detail. Although I’m not so sure I could keep them in my fridge. Kiddo might think they are fair game for snack time! YUCKKK! Hey…..stranger things have happened! lol
Hey, BTW…….what do you think about WordPress? I don’t like it….yet. I so miss my old layout. I can’t figure out how to use this thing! lol
Blessings~
